 The purpose of the conference:

 The II International Conference Mountains:  Biodiversity, Landscapes and Cultures,  -2024 is a noteworthy event designed to foster connections between knowledge sources and cultivate narratives, pathways and visions for a sustainable future.

 Bearing in mind our experience organising the International Conference Mountains Cultures, Landscapes and Biodiversity, we are excited to announce that this will be an in-person event with and virtual participation option.

An international conference on "Mountains: Biodiversity, Landscapes and Cultures " was held on May 10-12, 2019, organized by the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) and Western Caspian University (WCU)

 The conference covers four core topics, each offering a diverse array of breakout sessions:

 1.   Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment:

This session will delve into the comprehensive assessment of biodiversity in mountainous regions, emphasising the importance of preserving these unique ecosystems. Experts from the United Nations Environment Programme, the Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment, and the Mountain Research Initiative will lead discussions and provide insights.

2.         Global ecological problems:

Our environment faces several problems, and many of these seem to be worsening with time, bringing us into a time of a true environmental crisis. It is therefore becoming increasingly important to raise awareness of the existence of these issues, as well as what can be done to reduce their negative impact.

3.         Mountain cultures

Mountain culture is a rich and diverse aspect of human history that has been shaped by the unique landscapes and resources of mountain regions. Whether it's the music, cuisine, festivals, or art, the traditions of mountain communities provide a window into their unique way of life.

4.         Mountain tourism and economic impacts

Mountains are important tourism destinations worldwide and attract visitors for their scenic beauty, sports attractions and rich cultural heritage. Tourism represents a source of income and economic opportunities for remote rural mountain communities. It can also help to revitalise local traditions and food systems.

At the same time, sustainable culture and tourism can serve as an important driver of socio-economic development in mountain areas. Well- managed, community-based tourism increases and diversifies household incomes, enhances job and livelihood opportunities, supports traditional systems, builds resilience which helps to conserve and promote natural and cultural heritage across landscapes.

Unfortunately, the population living in the mountain ecosystem is urbanising as a result of socio-economic problems.Entrepreneurs who profit from this situation rent these regions and exploit them without protecting bio- and geo-diversity.

Possible options for enhance the peaceful coexistence of humans and wildlife should include raising awareness and training of local communities, defining a clear boundary between the closure area and land owned by residents, formulating rules and regulations for local communities, and equitable sharing of benefits.

 We look forward to welcoming you to this exciting conference, where we aim to promote a sustainable future while celebrating the rich diversity of mountain cultures, landscapes, and biodiversity.

 The main conference will be preceded by a day of informative workshops and an excursion to explore the natural beauty of Baku and its nearby areas, which may include the surrounding landscapes. The conference will feature a diverse range of sessions, with a particular focus on mountains.

 This critical discussion will be led by experts from the United Nations Environment Programme, the Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment, and the Mountain Research Initiative

 Western Caspian University will be responsible for covering delegates' expenses associated with the conference, including official receptions and meals, accommodation, local transportation, and cultural programs.
