Western  Caspian University, the first private higher education institution of Azerbaijan, was founded in 1991. Western  Caspian University has been a member of the International Association of Universities under UNESCO since 1992, the European Fund for Management Development since 1996, and the Black Sea Universities Network since 1999, as well as the Association for European Studies on the Caucasus (AESC), the Political Studies Association (PSA), the European Philosophy of Science Association (EPSA), the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), the International Association of Universities, the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA), the  UN Mountain Partnership Program,  Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) and a number of other international organizations, councils, and associations.
